Chalice

Chalice

The Chalice symbolizes the Goddess, initiation and fertility and is the magick tool of the west and the element of water. It is symbolic of the womb. In ritual, the chalice contains the wine that is blessed during your rites and shared. If your are a solitary, the you dedicate the wine to the Goddess and drink some and leave the rest to the spirits. Wine represents the life giving blood of the Goddess.

Whether you choose to buy your chalice or to make your own is entirely up to you. There are those who choose to find something from nature such as a sea shell to represent the chalice. Many of the commercial chalices are made from silver or pewter. Care must be taken of metallic chalices as holy water and acid ritual drinks such as wine can breakdown the plating which are then ingested. Traditionally, the chalice is made of silver. Silver is sacred to the Goddess because of its feminine and lunar qualities. The chalice represents the Mysteries, the purest symbol of the Divine Feminine, source of healing...the healing of the spirit. By drinking the blessed and dedicated fluid of life the Mysteries revealed. It is an act of communion of Self and Spirit. As Kathryn Campbell writes, "..once the wine is blessed, it becomes a gift of receptive renewal for all from the Source of All Things. As you drink, you can feel the divine energy flow into your center and, from that center, the divine energy flows outward into your being. You are filling every pore, every cell, with restorative power. You are quenching the thirst for understanding the Mysteries. The Mysteries cannot be taught. They must be revealed to you, in your own time, in their own way. By drinking the wine/blood of the Mother, she who is the revealer of the Mysteries, you are able to go within, commune with her and understand. The chalice represents the Grail and the quest to discover the mystical, the sacred, the purely personal realm of the Mysteries."

To make your own, you can either use wood or clay if you are good with your hands or buy a goblet which you then decorate as inspiration takes you! If you do make your own, it is advisable to glaze and seal the medium you have used. Alternately, horns have been used to represent the chalice though this may be more for male magick

Many of chalices are decorated with symbols that  represent the Goddess though their is no reason why you can't inscribe runes or symbols found in the particular pathway you follow.

Below are a few symbols used to give you a few ideas to be going on with.
